<description>Hungryfr is an online and mobile application and public display board that is designed to help community members gathered in one place to coordinate spontaneous activities. Developed as part of "designing conversational spaces" class, hungryfr creates a hybrid digital and physical platform for closed communities to use food as a social object, thus encouraging interaction.

Using design cues from the airport service design such as departures board and boarding pass, hungryfr synchronizes people's schedules and desires to "get out of the studio/office." Prototyped within the ITP floor for 2 months, currently the application is in the next phase of development to be rolled out in various office spaces in NYC and elsewhere.

Roles: User Experience Design, Visual Design, Kiosk Fabrication

Collaborators: Sheiva Rezvani, Jacki Steiner, Luisa Covaria-Hors, Archana Kumar, Zena Koo

Instructor: Clay Shirky

<description>seapeaker is a hearing aid for Istanbul. As part of a invited MoMA YAP proposal for Istanbul Modern Museum's courtyard, seapeaker was a finalist project.

Designed using rigorous acoustical principles and the generative capacities of the site, seapeaker amplifies sounds of the sea underneath and highlights the city's muted qualities in a surprising way. Placed diagonally in Istanbul Modern's courtyard, seapeaker organizes the previously empty space into a shaded hang-out area and a multi-functional venue, in which various spectacles and performances can unfold.

seapeaker uses various strategies for environmental sustainability, including analog sound amplification, seawater cooling, natural ventilation, energy-efficient lighting and re-used plywood materials. Socioeconomically, seapeaker involves regional maritime craftsmen for construction, while suggesting a fresh approach for other coastal infill sites in Istanbul and beyond.

This project was published in ArchDaily, MoMA YAP website, Arkitera and Istanbul Modern website.

Roles: Concept Development, Architectural Design, Sustainability Analysis, Interaction Design

<description>BldgTalk is a web-based platform that allows residents of a building to connect around shared interests, share resources, and engage with other tenants. It frames the building as a node in the neighborhood, city, and district, encouraging engagement with the community and municipal resources.

The project was developed for the first Good Design Hackaton that took place in April 2012 in NYC, and was awarded "Best of Social" by the Good design jury. The team is currently considering developing the idea further to create a functional beta prototype of BldgTalk.

Please refer to the this paper for precedences research and design strategy, written for an NYU Intelligent Cities class taught by Anthony Townsend.

		<description>

Creating lightning has always carried a sense of omnipotence in spiritual human history. Polytheistic cultures have postulated thunder Gods in manifold manifestation. As we move away from such mythological framings, we appropriate technology to enlist ourselves with similar powers, augmenting reality and extending physicality. Smart phones, embedded sensors and algorithmic actuators are lending us an unprecedented level of control over physical space. We are fascinated with this sense of authority and the digital Gods that we have become. However, do we question how far we would go with such technological control? Can we, and should we control lightning — one of the most ephemeral and mystical spectacle in nature?

ThunderWall is a large-scale street-level window installation that addresses the politics of enhanced control associated with technology. The piece enables passers-by to initiate and witness myriad lightning events in a raw interior space, simply by touching the bounding window display, which frames a projected smart phone application icon.

Technically, the touch is sensed using capacitive sensing via copper wire, which actuates a LED lighting strips using custom algorithms within Arduino. Acoustic actuators are used to emit sounds along with pico-projection to enhance the experience.

While the project’s technological infrastructure frames an irony of how far we want to go with technology, it also places the project away from the problematic digital divide, as anyone passing by can enable the lightning, without the need of a Twitter account, QR code reader, or even a phone. Moreover, the project subverts the typology of flattened, miniaturized and staged window displays by leaving the original space intact with minimal physical intervention and complete use of spatial depth.

Ultimately, the project challenges the visitor to reconsider the promise and subsequent implications of emerging technologies. Do we really want to control lightning bolts just because we can?

<description>cartographies is a social mapping project that takes residential and transport information of the NYU ITP students, and maps it in an interactive platform for exploration and discovery. The motivation for this project is to imply the serendipitous moments of encounter in urban settings beyond the natural hubs of centralized communities.

Built in processing using Unfolding mapping library, Cloudmade maps, three-js framework, and a custom algorithm adapting Google Maps API. Future work includes creating path animations of transit patterns, and constructing a physical sculpture to spatially represent the data.

<description>Swings is a site-specific interactive piece, where multiple sounds, noise and narratives are layered via swinging patterns of the user. By proposing to integrate interactive swings among existing architectural structures of the urban environment, we allow people to remain immersed in the context of the city, while encouraging reflection about its layered history.

The project uses iPhone for acceleration data, openFrameworks to layer audio samples, ObjectiveC for graphical user interface elements and bluetooth speakers for sound output. To emphasize environmental stewardship, the swings are constructed out of salvaged wood from a sewing machine crate and organic manila rope.

Next steps include site-specific installations in an old mannequin factory in Williamsburg, High Line and West Side Piers.

<description>sky lights:dumbo is a site-specific sculptural pavilion that utilizes ambient lighting within Brooklyn Bridge Park to show star constellations on the ground via cast shadows. The pavilion is organically shaped by site and programmatic constraints such as orientation, views and shadow paths. With its specific shape, location and perforation, the canopy is illustrates the complete star map of New York for the evenings of September 28-30th, the dates of Dumbo Festival 2012.

The motivation behind this project is to poetically address the politics of light, and specifically side effects of light pollution in urban settings. By using the streetlight as the source for the star map, the project challenges the visitor to reconnect with the larger planetary scale, the stars that enshroud us.

The project is currently in exhibition in Brooklyn Bridge Park for Dumbo Arts Festival 2012.

<description>Nowadays, we are co-located but isolated. The computer renders our intellectual activity anonymous within physical space. Before the digital age, we used to have cues of work activity via book covers, writing tools and scattered notes. These artifacts encouraged serendipitous interaction. But now, we sit nearly still, staring at our computers, with minimal gestures, and no hint of our work. In fact, we are more connected to those in our online social circles than who surrounds us. This is a missed opportunity for conversation, sharing and collaboration, especially in interdisciplinary educational and work settings.

hive is a ambient spatial media project that aims to enhance collaboration and sharing in physical spaces. It is Twitter-meets-Physical-Context, where the system visualizes and shares user's work status using a combination of website input, kinect sensing and projection.

The system consists of kinect, a hive website, a c++ desktop app, and a projector. The website is developed using Sinatra (ruby) and DataMapper. The data received from the website is parsed in .csv format, and received by the c++ desktop app using the ofHttpUtil library. Alongside, Kinect data is collected and processed using the openCV library within openFrameworks. The Web and Kinect input is used to determine the projection content onto the table surface.
